NUIG president fails to agree to 3 conditions and informs women that the university is seeking legal advice

On the morning of Dec 16th the petition and the signatories up till that date were presented to the governing body of NUI Galway. It seems they had an extended discussion on the matter of gender balance in senior posts and the problems with the last two promotion rounds. The president then met the five women who Micheline has been supporting in the afternoon. He said NUI Galway were seeking legal advice on whether Micheline’s result also applied to the 5. Following the lack of any positive statement from him they felt it best to still go ahead with submitting their case to the Circuit Court and High Court, which they have now done. However they remain hopeful that NUI Galway might come to see sense over the next month or so. In the mean time the more people who can sign the petition the better. It is important that NUI Galway see that should they embark on a legal case the issues raised by Micheline are not going to fade away and they are going to continue to be shown to be in the wrong.

“It said that NUIG intends to write to the Irish University Association and the Higher Education Authority to request that the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission be approached to carry out an equality review of the entire higher education sector.
NUIG is currently appealing an €81,000 award which the Equality Tribunal directed that it pay lecturer Mary Dempsey last summer, after it found that she was discriminated against by the university on the grounds of gender, family status and disability”

so the university is requesting that the HEA and human rights commission review the entire higher education sector while simultaneously appealing a judgement that found they had discriminated against a woman on the grounds of gender, family status and disability
